What is Internet Assigned Numbers Authority – IANA

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority IANA is the global coordination of the DNS Root, IP addressing, and other Internet protocol resources.

IANA provides the technical coordination needed in assigning unique numbers and codes needed for the smooth running of the Internet.

Based in Los Angeles Califonia, IANA oversees Management of the DNS Root, Co-ordination of the global pool of IPs and AS numbers and management of Internet protocols’ numbering systems.

IANA is a nonprofit private American corporation and function of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers – ICCAN.

IANA was founded in 1988 and was administered by american computer expert Jonathan Bruce Postel at the University of Southern California. Upon his death in 1998, ICCAN was founded and IANA became one of its functions.
