Ok so you would like to transfer your domain name to another domain registrar and they have asked you for your domain EPP code. You are lost and confused because you have no idea what an EPP code is.
Let me break your heart with the sad news that you will not be able to transfer your domain unless you get its EPP/Auth Code. Ok, don’t worry because I will explain to you what an EPP is and where you can get it to have your domain transferred to a new registrar.
What is an EPP Code?
EPP code is a domain authorization code that is also referred to as an Auth Code. The EPP code provides an extra level of security for the domain name registration and transfers.
The EPP code is unique to each domain name and is assigned by the registrar at the time of registration.
When is an Auth Code Needed?
You’ll need an Auth Code to transfer a domain from one registrar to another. Specifically, Auth/EPP codes are required for .com, .net, .org, .us, .biz, .info, .me, .co, .io, .ca, .tv, .in, .mobi, .cc, .pe, .com.pe, .net.pe, .org.pe,.tech, .top, .party, .loan, .faith and other new gTLD/country code TLD domain transfers.
Do I need an Auth Code to transfer my web hosting?
An Epp code is typically needed to authorize the transfer of a domain from one registrar to another. In order to transfer from one web hosting provider to another, you may transfer the domain but its not absolutely necessary.
One option is to simply change your name servers associated with your domain to the new host’s nameservers. This way you will not need to transfer the domain and no EPP code will be needed.
You can also just point the hosting A record to the IP address of the server on which you will be hosting your website. This method will also not need an Auth Code.
If you choose to move both your domain and hosting to a new provider, you will then need an EPP code to have the transfer of domain approved.
How To Get an EPP Code
The process of getting your Auth code defers from one registrar to another. You will need to look around the domain control panel to see where the EPP is. It could be easier to simply write to your domain registrar and ask for the EPP code.
If you are unable to get it from the registrar and you need to do it yourself, this guide could point you in the right direction.
- Log in to your domain registrar’s client area.
- Locate the domain you wish to transfer.
- Navigate to the Domain Settings page.
- Look for a transfer menu normally labelled, Transfer domain.
- Select the Click to view Authorization Code.
